Day 12 - Clay Bank Top to Blakey Ridge - 11 miles

Bar at The Buck Inn

This is where we stayed last night and we fell in love with Wolfgang and Helen's two Giant Schnauzers, River and Tilly
River and Tilly

Last night was great for me as my old friend Martin, who I haven't seen for 38 years, drove over from Stockton to meet us. We had a great time!

Wolfgang drove us back to Clay Bank Top after breakfast and we were on our way to Blakey Ridge. The weather was hazy but warm at least to begin with. We only had one big climb up an old packhorse trail to Carr Ridge and purple heather as far as the eye can see. The track is flat and wide as we make our way to the edge of Urra Moor.

Soon the wind picks up and the weather is starting to close in and it really looks as if we are going to have a downpour. We have become a bit cocky in the last few days and taken lots of stuff out of our backpacks, including rain gear. A major faux pas. We had been congratulating ourselves on how we were surely becoming seasoned walkers and we'd made a couple of really silly mistakes, first, not checking the weather and second, not packing rain gear anyway. It got quite cold and blowy but fortunately Jen did have a long sleeved shirt, which I wore and she put on a windbreaker.

We put a real push on, all thoughts of having a relaxing picnic and maybe a snooze in the heather had vanished and we walked faster than we had all of the trip.  Fortunately for us the weather blew by and the sun came out as we approached the Lion Inn on Blakey Ridge in record time…12:30. Just in time for lunch!

So now I'm all caught up with the blog and we've been out for a stroll and it's still only 5pm… that means it must be time for a hot bath and a glass of wine before dinner.

It's rather windy up here

  2. So wonderful to read! I was bereft yesterday when there was no post. Can't you just walk back when you get to Robin Hood's Bay?

  3. I loved all the history that goes with the old railway track. It was amazing to think how much industry went on up there. It must have been very harsh. The Lion Inn is quite a special place stuck up there on the moor.
