Day 10 - Richmond to Ingleby Cross - 25 miles

We get an early start this morning as we're walking so far and we are on the road by 7:45 am. Legs not working.
Boots at the door, Riverview B&B

We walk the road out of town and then along a smelly path by a sewage works and through a dank, dark wood. We can hear the sounds of heavy artillery fire coming from the base at Catterick and this noise stays with us for a long time. There's a diversion for roadworks that adds some distance to our walk.
Means distance to our walk

Busy road
As we cross the road bridge over the A1 we come across this.
Digging up the remains of a Roman town - it's a significant find, important enough to halt the road improvements until the dig is complete

Then it's fields and fields and some more fields before we hit a quiet road which we follow for a long time before coming to our lunch spot at The White Swan in Danby Whiske. We had hoped for a hot meal but that's not on offer but we have some nice soup. And more importantly we get to take our socks and boots off for a while. I can almost see the steam rising from my feet. We've got 13 miles behind us now so we're feeling confident we can arrive at our B&B before dinner.

After lunch we can see the Cleveland Hills getting closer.

We saw lots of fields like this
It's hard to describe what it's like to walk so far in a day…I think the brain was on autopilot for most of the afternoon.
We walk and walk
Not dead, merely resting

We were a little worried about crossing the A19 - four lanes of fast moving traffic, but in the end it was simple. The final walk to our B&B took us through Inglebly Cross then up and up into the hills to Park House, a lovely farmhouse with a lovely hostess, Bev, who handed us an ice cold glass of sparkling wine. Heaven.
